As a black teen female born to a single mother, my surroundings encouraged me to believe that generational poverty was an unbreakable cycle. An unstable household, peer pressure, drug abuse, family altercations, dealings with the justice system and minimal financial assistance are few of the many obstacles that I have had to endure. Being physically active, self-affirmations and journaling are two of the many self help practices that kept me grounded in the storms associated with generational poverty.
In grade school, my potential for college was revealed to me by my teachers, coaches, and public figures within the community. Their encouragement fed me new dreams and interests, so I began to plan. I graduated top 3% of my high school class in Summer 2013 and entered a Public White Institution that Fall. Culture shock, family death, continued dealings with the justice system and my lack of resourcefulness as a first generation college student stunted my college career and emotional health, but tapping into the social, physical, mental and intellectual dimensions of wellness along with the desire to break the chains of generational poverty allowed me to continue my fight. I traveled abroad for the first time February 2018 to March 2019, embarking on an international journey to China. I taught English and conducted personal research on Holistic Health practices while learning the mandarin language in China. I am now back home with my husband, a U. S. Army officer, eager to put apply my research in the health care field.
Having acquired experience and contributed to physical, intellectual, mental and spiritual health through previous jobs and community service, I continue my journey towards business ownership as a healthcare provider and military spouse; I aspire to establish a Holistic Health Care Center with community education and contribute to the global understanding of health through the seven dimensions of wellness.
